New Rookie Rankings - and a look ahead

No surprise, Tyreke is still dominating the polls for Rookie of the Year.  There was a shake-up though as Curry went from 5th to 2nd, edging out Jennings who dropped to 3rd.

I don't particularly feel that Curry is playing better than Jennings on the whole, but he's had a better stretch than Jennings over the last week or so.  Does that merit jumping three spots?  Maybe.  But I'm not ready to punch that ticket yet.

I still believe that it's a bit of a moot point though.  Tyreke should take this thing easily at this point barring any injuries.  He is the most physical player of the three mentioned, so anything is possible - though I don't wish it on him.  I can't believe I'm rooting for a Kings player.  I'll root for him until he torches the Blazers - then he'll be on my bad side.

What I really wanted to talk about this morning is really the new story that developing across basketball: the Calipari point-guard legacy.

Derrick Rose and Tyreke Evans both played under Calipari as atypical point guards.  And now John Wall is grabbing national attention as perhaps being on the same level as those two superstar players.  Currently, Wall is averaging 17.2 points, 3.8 rebounds, 7.1 assists and is shooting 50% from the field.  The kid is so well rounded that it's hard to believe that lightning could strike three times for coach Cal.

Cal himself is a controversial figure.  But I think all of college athletics is corrupt.  So I don't really pay attention to the noise of the 'grown-ups' who make their living in college athletics.  The way things are shaping up, Wall will follow his predecessors and be a one-and-done player and move on to the NBA where he'll make more money than anybody associated with Kentucky basketball.

Derrick Rose won Rookie of the Year in 08/09.
Tyreke is on pace to win Rookie of the Year in 09/10.
Can we pencil in Wall as the odds on favorite for 10/11?  It's a distinct possibilty.

If you haven't found a player to collect or root for at this point, John Wall is just on the horizon.  If you could get in on the ground floor of that kid's offerings, you'll be well on your way to having a RC collection worthy of a boast or two.
