This is for two reasons. 1) It's more fun to do things with cards on Sunday mornings. And 2) There is a high probability that somebody else has trademarked the term 'Friday Night Smackdown'. I can't be sure. But in this land of "free speech", I'll err on the side of caution and not coin somebody else's phrase for my collecting purposes.
So without further ado....
We're going to do a double pack Smack-off, errrr duel? Yes, duel. We're pitting together a double pack of 09/10 Topps Basketball and 09 Topps Updates and Highlights baseball.
The rules for this contest: Today I'm feeling a bit froggy. A bit of caution-to-the-wind today. I'm just going to show you the best card from each pack and let the winner be determined by that one card representation.
So, baseball pack 1:
Best Card
I like these propaganda cards. And Timmy Lincecum is a pretty good propaganda card to have. Nice start to the baseball.
Basketball Pack 1:
Best Card
A chrome Corey Maggette. The Chrome doesn't scan well, but it's a nice card. And it's nice to get the Chrome since they didn't make a Topps Chrome this year.
Still, Edge goes to baseball....
Basketball Pack 2
Best Card
Seriously, click on this image and take in the glory that this card brings through it's photography. Swift vs. Lopez. Hair vs. Hair. And early nominee for photo of the year.
Baseball Pack 2
Best Card
Yeah, the Griffey Jr. card comes through. Must be a sign that the Mariners will be a good team this year.
Edge goes to baseball
Overall, baseball is the clear winner in this contest. There was other base of course. Some gold version parallels, but these cards were the best of the packs and baseball came out on top. I'm still tempted by the awesome photos of Topps basketball. But the baseball has the better inserts this go around. That Griffey card is just a nice looking card.
