Things that make you go...huh?

Every now and again, I'll see something in my hobby that I just don't understand.  Like I just don't get it.  Here's a card up for auction right now.  Just take a look.

It's a Jordan printing plate 1/1 from 07/08 SP Rookie Edition.  It's a printing plate.  And he sent it to Beckett....

For what?  What grade could Beckett possibly give a piece of metal?  So what did Beckett do?  They just put a sticker on there saying it was 'Authentic'.  Really?

The seller says that the card was sent to Beckett to certify it's authenticity becuase there are a lot of fake printing plates out there.  What???

It makes my head hurt.  Obviously, Beckett wasn't going to turn down a fee for encapsulation, so the slabbed it and assigned it a serial number saying it's authentic.  Because all those fakes out there from 07/08 SP Rookie Edition could make the card sell for less or something.  The more time I spend in this hobby, the more evident it is to me that there is an "us" and "them" as never before.  There is no middle ground anymore.

You're either in that camp that thinks this is a good idea.  Or you not.

I'm in the camp that still has some common sense intact.

I think I'm going to start grading my own cards and selling them on ebay. Send me your cards, too. For a small fee I'll seal them in my Food Saver and slap a random serial number on it. I have just as much experience and authority to do that as Beckett or anyone else, don't I? I'll need help coming up with a grading scale. Something sarcastic and mean spirited to remind the douchebag owner of the card that he ruined it. Even if it was just a printing plate.
