Well, Panini, it's not retro - but you're getting closer

I periodically check blowoutcards pre-sale items for basketball and I'm constantly a bit crushed by how few releases we're going to see.

But today I checked, and there was a new listing!  And they called it Panini Classics!  I thought it was retro!

That's probably enough exclamation points.

So I looked at the sell sheet.  And I wasn't seeing what I had hoped.  I thought by the name that it would be a retro theme.  But it's retro players and photos on modern day themes.

The subjects in the sell sheet look good.  I'll have to wait until it comes out to make a definite decision on it, but at least it's a step in the right direction.

What Panini needs to do is - and I hate to say this - copy Topps Heritage.  Well not exactly.  But take a release from the past, say 70 or 71 Basketball and put modern day players in that format.  We retro junkies are nerds for stuff like that.  Get your feet wet Panini.

The release is scheduled for Mar 31.  They needed to have a retro release this year with ON-CARD autos.  Unfortunately, Kobe Bryant is the only auto on card (or so it appears).

I think the timing is right.  Right before the NBA playoffs people will be looking for a fresh release, I just hope that Panini has really invested themselves into one of their final releases of the season.

It's one of the better looking Panini products, but what's with the tiny patch windows?

Panini would not be able to use 70 or 71 basketball without a lawsuit from Topps.
