Just watched this video of Panini's where some lucky guy pulled a golden ticket redemption from Playoff Contenders football.
I have to say, if you're going to get a redemption, a solid gold card is something that should, in theory, be pulled as a redemption. I have no problem with that part of the story.
What gets me, is that they show off this card on the video, and it's literally encapsulated in a Beckett grading-style holder. Really? How pissed would you be to get the solid gold card in your hand...and not be able to touch the gold? This guy literally can't touch the gold card.
Beckett didn't grade the card. But they have their damn insignia more pronounced on the card than Panini's is. And yet somehow Panini thinks it better to have Beckett's presence more visible than it's own?
C'mon. How do you not let the guy touch the actual gold card? And supposedly, all 52 cards that Panini made like this are in the same condition. So if this guy wants to sell it, he'll have to leave it in the Beckett holder to list it on ebay so that people will know it's legit. I guess only the absolute final buyer of this card could get away with breaking the plastic case off if they so choose. What, were they worried about the corners getting dinged on the gold card? Maybe the edges getting frayed?
No, it's just Beckett for Beckett's sake.
Hey guys. Give your wife some gold jewelry but tell her she can't touch it. It's got to stay in the box. Tell me how that works out for you.
Literally the first thing I thought when I saw this video is that he'll never actually touch the gold card.
So what if the card isn't 14kt? Guess he'll never now.
Shamockery.
I am glad that a collector who's been collecting a while will get paid off. He is selling the card. But encapsulating should always be the collector's choice. Freaking Panini and freaking Beckett.
MY GOD, HOW DOES THE COLLECTOR NEVER GET TO TOUCH THE GOLD CARD?????
Here's the card the guy pulled. It's on ebay, here. Like I said, he'll get paid handsomely. But he'll never touch the gold. Oh well, I guess some people are into that sorta thing.

If I won one of those, I'd take it our of the case, put a chain on it and wear it around my neck. Word.
@ TJ, that's the best comment ever!!!
@ G_Moses, I am someone who puts all the cards I can in snap mag holders. So encapsulating the card isn't really a big deal to me. I do think they should have actually graded the cards if they were going to have Beckett encapsulating the cards.
I'm sure there are some good reasons for encapsulating the cards, however, The snap mag cases with the Panini seals they used on some of the cards included in the Plates & Patches football.
I think they're pretty cool cards and idea. Maybe, just not the best execution.
Charles,
I agree that they could've given something to specially fit the cards. But complete encapsulation? That's going overboard. And it's robbing the collector of a chance to really own the card.
I know that I'm not the only person who feels every jersey swatch/patch that I get. Getting relic cards would be nothing if you could never actually touch them.
And it still is Beckett for Beckett's sake. That's still an issue.
I'd imagine the surface of the gold is fairly condition sensitive, could probably get scratched easily. I wouldn't have a problem with it being encapsulated to protect it if I had the opportunity to own something like that.
Gold plating might be sensitive. But real gold, especially jewelry is pretty resistant.
I'm not against them providing a special case that it can go in, but something like that being encapsulated right off the bat bugs the hell out me.
And it's not just Beckett that gets me. If PSA had done it I'd be equally as pissed. But being Beckett, and recent Panini additions are Beckett people, it just goes one step too far again.
Word of the day: Shamockery
I love it... I'm going to try to use it as least once with my students next week.
